46th Street Mural Project is Almost Complete
Seattle bank donation helps project completion and community celebration

SEATTLE, Wash.—(August 5, 2010)—The 46th Street Mural Project is pleased to announce that it has almost completed its community mural project. The mural is scheduled to be dedicated at a community celebration at the site on August 27. Seattle Bank donated funds essential to finishing the project.

“This mural project has really brought neighbors and the community together,” said Linda Clifton, secretary of the 46th Street Mural Project Steering Committee. “We are grateful to Seattle Bank for this crucial donation for completing the project and celebrating it with the community.”

The mural, designed by Todd Lown, with its vibrant colors and tantalizing design, spruces up the very heavily traveled—and until now—drab intersection of N 46th Street and Highway 99. Urban ArtWorks manages the project and supplies the core painting crew, joined by volunteers from Wallingford, Fremont, and the surrounding area.

“We are pleased to have been able to help with the completion of this project,” said Frank Rizo, Seattle Bank’s Wallingford banking center manager. “Our dedication to our community goes beyond providing world-class financial services—we are always eager to help improve the community environment.”

About the 46th Street Mural Project: Fremont and Wallingford neighbors organized in 2009 to build community and improve the cityscape by constructing a lasting mural to brighten this underpass, used by thousands of cars and pedestrians every day. The mural links Upper Fremont and Wallingford, and deters graffiti and crime. The project is funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. The fiscal sponsor is the Fremont Neighborhood Council.

LOWN REDESIGN APPROVED FOR THE 46TH STREET UNDERPASS MURAL

Redesigned to accommodate the overhead live trolley wires in the Aurora Avenue underpass at North 46th Street in Seattle, Todd Lown’s mural has been approved by the City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. Lown began placing the design on the wall this week.

“We like the way the redesign turned out and actually think that the irregularity of the top edge has made the overall design more dynamic,” Patricia Hopper, Project Manager of the Public Art Program in the Mayor’s office, wrote in the approval letter.

“We are pleased and relieved that Todd did the redesign and that it got approval so fast,” said Steering Committee co-chair Craig Van den Bosch. “Volunteers have already removed weeds and scraped the wall’s rough spots, so we are ready to go.”

Linda Clifton, the project’s secretary, added, “We are so grateful that the community has been so supportive and so flexible. We especially thank Ballard Window Works who stood ready to power wash the wall and Jeff Breitenstein & Skot O'Mahony, the neighbors who offered to donate the water.” Because of the redesign, power washing will not be necessary.

Permits have been granted and painting begins July 7 under the direction of Lown and Urban ArtWorks, a nonprofit organization that empowers at-risk youth through employment in the arts. Lown’s public art includes design and direction for the Gates

LOWN DESIGN CHOSEN FOR
THE 46^TH STREET UNDERPASS MURAL

Todd Lown’s design will brighten the Aurora Avenue underpass at North 46^th Street in Seattle, chosen by consensus at the 46^th Street Mural Project Steering Committee meeting May 5. Lown was one of three finalists selected by the committee to submit designs this spring.

“This was no snap decision. Quite the contrary,” said Steering Committee member Gerald Diamond. “Volunteers first set up and conducted an online survey, constructed poster boards and placed them in clubs and schools for voting in both Wallingford and Fremont. They read input from emails to help evaluate each artwork and spent many volunteer hours in comparing the merits of each submission.”

“We gathered nearly 1000 votes in our advisory polling,” Steering Committee secretary Linda Clifton said, “with over 800 responding to our online survey, and many more on the poster boards at Wallingford Boys and Girls Club, Hamilton Middle School, BF Day Elementary, Kapka, Not A Number, Alphabet Soup and the Fremont Village Fair at Fremont Abbey.”

Lown’s mural received a majority of advisory votes cast, though all three designs submitted showed significant support. “The choice was difficult, as all three designs were imaginative, colorful and intriguing,” said Craig van den Bosch, Steering Committee Co-Chair. “Finally, we had to consider available budget and timing, as well as design and the advisory vote.”

Lown will be awarded $2000 for his winning design once it is approved in the City of Seattle’s design review process. Kirsten Ramirez and Susan Brown, the other two finalists in the competition, previously received a $300 honorarium for submitting proposals, as did Lown.

Lead artist for Urban ArtWorks, Lown holds a BFA from the University of Washington, and has studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Lown says his work focuses “on perspective, environment, form and color.” His works are “a combination of prints, animation, signage, drawing and painting both illustrative and abstract.” His public art includes design and direction for the Gates Foundation construction site mural, the Bellevue Indoor Skatepark mural, the external mural for the King Street Station renovation and the West Edge Control Box Project.
